Pet Dental Care from Our Salt Lake City Veterinarians
At Cottonwood Animal Hospital, our Salt Lake City vets provide a wide range of veterinary services to pets in the following areas of town: Cottonwood Heights, Midvale, Murray, and Sandy. In addition to pet emergency services and routine wellness care, we also provide pet dental care to protect your beloved pet's oral health. If it's been more than a couple years since your pet's last dental exam and/or cleaning, now is a great time to schedule an appointment with us.
The Importance of Regular Pet Dental Care
There are many reasons as to why regular pet dental care is so important. For starters, your pet's oral health can be closely linked to his or her cardiovascular health. For example, did you know that pets with gum disease are also more likely to have heart disease or other heart problems?
Furthermore, when you bring your pet in for routine dental care, you can make sure that your pet isn't suffering from oral health problems. During a routine dental exam, we'll take a close look at not just your pet's teeth, but the gums and other areas of the mouth as well. If necessary, we can also perform dental X-rays, which can often catch underlying problems that may not otherwise be visible.
In addition to regular exams, occasional dental cleanings are the best way to remove plaque and tartar build-up from below and above your pet's gum line, which can reduce his or her risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease while also working to freshen breath.
Common Pet Dental Problems
Unfortunately, our veterinarian sees and treats a wide range of dental problems on a regular basis. Tooth decay is one of the most common problems we see, as pets who don't receive regular cleanings are very susceptible to cavities. Over time, these cavities can develop into painful and dangerous infections known as tooth abscesses. We also routinely see and diagnose cases of gum disease in pets. Pets with gum disease suffer from inflamed gums that bleed easily. Over time, gum disease can also lead to infections underneath the gum line that cause permanent tooth loss, rendering your pet unable to chew dry food and requiring pets to go on a special diet.
