Pet Orthopedics From Cottonwood Animal Hospital in Salt Lake City

A veterinary orthopedic surgeon focuses on treating skeletal disorders in animals. The term orthopedic surgery generally refers to any surgical repair of the bones or joints. Usually, surgery is required due to trauma. Some may be the result of a congenital condition that affects either the bones or the joints. While the recovery and rehabilitation process may be long, it’s possible for an animal to make a full recovery after a surgical procedure. For questions or concerns about your pet’s well-being, contact the Cottonwood Animal Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Common Types of Pet Surgery

  • Repairing a bone fracture
  • Repairing torn ligaments
  • Repairing a dislocated kneecap
  • Procedures to relieve hip joint pain caused by arthritis
  • Hip, elbow, and knee replacements

Symptoms of Orthopedic Issues

Your pet may display a wide variety of symptoms that indicate joint and bone issues. These include:

  • Lameness in any leg
  • Limping or any indication of pain
  • Difficulty getting up
  • A decrease in physical activity

Veterinary Screenings

During regular checkups, your veterinarian may screen for common diseases. Larger breeds that are prone to hip dysplasia and joint problems may be closely monitored as a preventative measure. This is done by monitoring weight and food intake. X-rays can also identify abnormalities before they cause problems. Other screenings include physical exams that can identify issues like a damaged cruciate ligament and arthritis. Your vet may also use radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasound for a diagnosis.

What to Expect

If it’s determined your pet needs surgery, your vet will perform a pre-operative exam to ensure the safety of your pet. Blood is drawn for pre-anesthetic testing, which indicates if there are any issues with blood count and kidney and liver function. This lets us know it is safe to provide anesthesia during the procedure. During the surgery, your pet will receive a breathing tube and an assistant will monitor blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygen levels.

Many pet surgery procedures necessitate at least an overnight stay, but in some cases, your pet may be able to go home the same day. You will receive post-op instructions on any medications to give your pet at home, wound treatment, and details on follow-up appointments.

Testimonial

We have tried several other vets in the area and always end up going back to Cottonwood. So now we go to them first. Everyone there is so nice and so helpful. We are very happy with them and will continue to bring our loved ones to them first.
